This passage is about desertion vs. exertion. Paul uses his pain to minister to Timothy. His joy surpasses the pain. And every act of desertion away from something is necessarily an exertion towards something else. Jesus exerted love for those who deserted Him. He didn't just save us, he transformed us. He was rejected by His Father so that we could have the thrill of receipt.
